A Study on Lord Jim’s Dual Identity
Abstract
In Lord Jim, Conrad creates the character Jim as a person with a dual identity of Christian hero and the imperialism agent. He continues to seek for self-integrity advocated by Christian religion, in spite of many frustrations, until he finally reaches his aim through self-sacrifice and wins the name of “Lord Lim” in Patusan. However, the perfection of morality what Jim pursued are based on the racial discrimination and the unequal nationality. They took root in the imperialism and the colonialism soil, Jim is at the same time described by Conrad as an agent of imperial expansion who works in dishonorable ways to make profits for his company. The oppostition between the advocation of morals by Christianity and the expansion of empire causes the conflict between Jim’s behavior and the social environment. His death is inevitable due to the conflicts between his two identities.

摘 要
康拉德在《吉姆老爺》1書中將主人公吉姆塑造為1個(gè)虔誠的基督徒英雄和帝國主義殖民擴(kuò)張代理人雙重身份的形象。他雖然經(jīng)受多次失敗和挫折,仍矢志不渝地追求基督教意義上的自我完善，直到最終以自我犧牲來達(dá)到他的基督教理想，并被帕圖桑當(dāng)寺人尊稱為“吉姆老爺”。然而吉姆所追求的道德完美是基于種族歧視和民族不平等之上,扎根于帝國主義和殖民主義土壤中的。他同時(shí)被描述為帝國主義殖民擴(kuò)張的代理人,為帝國主義貿(mào)易公司工作，用各種不光彩的手段奴役殖民地人民。由于基督教提倡的道德與帝國擴(kuò)張的'根本對(duì)立，致使他的這些行為與他所處社會(huì)歷史環(huán)境相抵觸。他的死是其雙重身份不斷激化的產(chǎn)物,具有歷史必然性。
