On the Study of the Translator’s Social Status

Abstract

As long as translation came into existance, the translator has been an indispensable part in the process of translation. He/She acts as a reader, an author and even a creator in literary translation and has a reputation for cross-culture inter-mediator. However, the translator didn’t enjoy such a great reputation in the early days, and his/her social status hasn’t been improved until recent times.
Based on the study of the translator’s different social status in different times and some practical investigations in today’s translation field, this thesis described the improvement of the translator’s social status, so as to give people a better understanding about the translator.
Starting with the description of the translator’s importance in society, the author brings the reader to take the topic seriously. Then, the thesis focuses on the translator’s social status in different times, that is, in the early days and the recent days. It finally concludes with the author’s forecast of the translator’s social status in the future, giving the reader a comprehensive understanding about the translator.

摘  要

自翻譯問世以來，譯者便成為翻譯過程中必不可少的1部分。在翻譯過程中，他/她充當著讀者、作者甚至是創(chuàng)造者的身份，且享有 “跨文化調解者”的美譽。然而在早期,譯者并未享有此類聲譽，直到近期，他們的社會地位才有所提高。
基于對不同時期譯者不同社會地位的研究以及對當今翻譯領域的1些實地調查，本文主要概述譯者社會地位的提高，使人們對譯者有更清楚的認識。
本文先從闡述譯者在社會中的重要性開始，使讀者對此話題引起重視。然后從早期到當代不同時期分別論述譯者不同的社會地位，這是本文最重要的兩部分。最后作者對譯者未來的社會地位作了相應預測，使讀者對譯者有個全面而綜合的了解。
