A Multi-faceted Analysis of Robert Jordan in For Whom the Bell Tolls
Abstract
For Whom the Bell Tolls is one representative of Hemingway’s works. Robert Jordan, the protagonist of this novel, is one typical image of Hemingway’s code man. This thesis is a multi-faceted analysis of Robert Jordan from three points: heroism, negative and tragedy in order to research the complexity of personality. Firstly, it can get a explaination that he is a heroic character from his tenacious will, extraordinary audacity, excellent ability and his purpose of participation in the war. Secondly, it displays the side of negative on him from his negative attitude toward love and mission. And last it is to analyze his tragic love and tragic death in order to reveal his tragedy. The complex characteristic of Robert Jordan reflects the value of life and the sense of reality in Hemingway’s literature works.

摘 要
《戰(zhàn)地鐘聲》是海明威的代表作之1，其中主人公羅伯特•喬丹是典型的海明威式硬漢形象。本文從人物的英雄性，消極性和悲劇性3個方面對羅伯特•喬丹進行多維審視，研究其人物性格的復(fù)雜性。首先，通過對他堅韌的意志力，非凡的膽識和卓越的才能及他參戰(zhàn)目的的重新閱讀，闡釋其英雄氣概。然后，透過他對愛情和此次任務(wù)的消極態(tài)度，表現(xiàn)其身上消極的1面。最后，通過分析他的.悲劇愛情和悲劇死亡，從而揭示人物的悲劇性。羅伯特•喬丹復(fù)雜的人性特征體現(xiàn)出了海明威文學作品的生命價值和真實意義。
